Scholarship to study at Oxford. Ways to finance education at Oxford. Bad habit Chancellor Scholarship for London South Bank University

In the article, one of the GSA subscribers speaks in detail about his successful experience of entering Oxford – one of the best universities in the world.

I decided to take a higher education abroad when I was a student in the 11th grade. Most importantly, this was worked with by my support in the International Chemistry Olympiad, held in Tokyo. In addition to the mass of impressions from distant Japan in the geographical and cultural sense, I returned to my homeland with the firm intention to continue my university studies abroad. However, there are significant difficulties in determining a specific direction, mainly due to the lack of information and ignorance of where this information can be obtained.

Where to go to study?

Ultimately, in abandoning Japan and Germany for language reasons, my choice fell on higher education institutions in the USA and Great Britain. An official conclusion was made affected by two variables. The first makes sense: the costs of the admission process to any US university are more expensive than in the case of British universities.

Although it was almost two hundred dollars, in those days (end of 2010-2011) it was a very serious argument, because. an economic crisis broke out in Belarus, and it was very difficult to get money. The second factor is more emotional. Once I go to my Facebook page, I discovered that one of the participants of the last international Olympiad (a representative of Estonia) had entered Cambridge. I then posed the inquiry: “If he, who got a spot underneath me at the Olympiad (who was 2 years more seasoned simultaneously), came in, for what reason didn’t I attempt to do likewise?”

So, my destination is the UK.

Presently the need has become to track down a grant that takes care of the expense of educational costs and living. It is noteworthy that the cost of education for British and EU citizens is noticeably lower than for students from the rest of the world-students abroad. Furthermore, Her Majesty’s citizens and citizens of EU countries have the option to receive an interest-free education loan, the repayment of which will only start when the graduate starts earning more than £ 25,000 in one year. The total costs mentioned above in the UK are for overseas students around £ 40,000 per year and vary slightly depending on the university.

Hence, the far and wide conviction that schooling at Oxford and Cambridge is discernibly more costly than at different colleges is mistaken. As for scholars, as happened, for bachelor programs, in principle, very few of them, and only a few have full coverage. At the beginning of 2011, there was only one such scholarship – the Reach Oxford Scholarship (there was a separate Chevening scholarship for citizens of the Russian Federation). This fact was the reason for the final choice in favor of Oxford University.

What to do after 11th grade of school: 2 ways

A very important point is that it is impossible to enter the UK after graduating from an 11-year school because, at Foggy Albion, education takes 12 years. There are three ways to exceed this limit-by studying for 1 year at a university in Russia, graduating from school under the International Baccalaureate program, or studying 1 year in the UK at a college under the Foundation program – a sort of simple of our preliminary courses. The advantage of the first two options is the use of a knowledge analysis system known and understood by the British. From a financial point of view, the first option is the most attractive, so I entered the Chemistry Department of Moscow State University (fortunately, success at the International Mendeleev Olympiad allows me to do it without exams and pass the exam).

The second fact you should pay attention to is that the admission process begins about a year before the expected start of university studies (usually on September 15). The deadline for accepting applications is from October 15 for Oxford and Cambridge, to January 15 for most other universities. It is also necessary to note that a foreigner for admission to any higher educational institution in the UK requires a document proving a high level of English proficiency. Such documents may be IELTS (academic) certificates, TOEFL, Cambridge exams.

The process of admission to Oxbridge, as the universities of Oxford and Cambridge are called, can be divided into 4 stages: application, interview, academic acquisition, and other results specified in the offer condition, and, finally, obtaining a British student visa. I was lucky enough to participate in 3 of the 4 stages, which I wanted to talk about.

Applications for UK universities are made entirely online. There is a special organization UCAS (Universities and Colleges Application Service) that receives and processes applications and then sends them directly to universities. To apply to the university (the maximum number of courses that can be applied for is 5; it is not allowed to apply to Oxford and Cambridge at the same time), you must register on the website and fill out the Application Form. The form itself includes both relatively small items, such as personal data, secondary education, work experience, contacts, and sections called Personal Statement (such as a letter of motivation) and Reference (recommendation). ), which should be considered.
